World's Largest Wind Farm a Possibility in South Dakota

Howard Wind Turbine

By Associated Press

South Dakota is officially rated as number 4 in the nation when it comes to potential capacity to make electricity from wind, although that ranking is more than a decade old.  Many industry officials believe the Great Plains state is the windiest of all.

That may be why Clipper Windpower of California is planning to build the world's largest wind farm in South Dakota.  The project would cost $6 billion and have at least 2,400 turbines.  It would begin on a much smaller scale, however, and ramp up as more transmission lines are added in the state.
