Klaudt Prepares For 2nd Rape Trial

By Nancy Naeve

Former State Representative Ted Klaudt's attorney doesn't know if they will appeal his guilty verdict. They haven't decided yet.  A Hughes County jury convicted him of raping two of his foster daughters in Pierre while he was serving in the legislature in 2005 and 2006.

The 49 year old is expected to face a jury and a judge again next week for 10 similar charges in Corson County where he's from. He's accused of sexually molesting other girls who were placed in his rural Walker home as foster children after being released from state reform schools.

The formal charges are 4 counts of second-degree rape, 2 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, 1 count of sexual contact with a child under the age of 16, 2 counts of witness tampering and 1 count of stalking.

He is free on bond until he is sentenced on January 4th. Each count is punishable up to 25 years in prison, so he could get 100 years in prison.

He was in Deadwood on November 7th for a pre-trial hearing. His Rapid City attorney Tim Rensch told me they are hoping for a plea agreement. The state and Klaudt have until Friday to reach an agreement.  If they don't. Klaudt will stand trial beginning on November 13th in Deadwood.

Rensch says, "I am concerned the guilty verdict will influence trial number two but we will have to deal with that during the jury selection process. "

Klaudt concocted a perverted scheme telling the teenage girls they could make thousands of dollars if they donated their reproductive eggs but he would have to physically exam them to see if they were viable candidates.
