School Forced To Consolidate

Students at the Conde School may have to go to a new school when the district is forced to consolidate.

By Dawn Crawley

There are four kids in this math class, Conde is a small school but in the fall of 2009, it won't be a school at all. Conde will have to reorganize and consolidate.

"I don't like it at all. The school hasn't done anything wrong. We are getting a great education and we shouldn't have to close just because of numbers," said Sophomore Autumn Sanderson.

But the numbers do matter. Conde has 54 students and the state requirement is to have 100 students enrolled in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

"We didn't feel that was very fair because we knew that we were giving our students a quality education. what we based that on was our test scores and how our students were doing compared to other students across the state of South Dakota," said Principal Matthew Pollock.

Kids in Conde will be heading off to another school.

"I always thought when I was a little kid, man, I can't wait to be in high school. You know because high school kids they are the coolest but Conde, not going to happen now," said Sophomore Aaron Worlie.

But a consolidation plan is happening and it has to be completed by July.

The School Board has until July first to come up with a consolidation plan and then the community will vote on it.

The school board is looking at consolidating with Groton, Doland, or Mellette.
