Flooded Road

By Derick Fabert

Remember last March when the Little Minnesota River didn't seem so little to the people of Browns Valley, MN? Flooding took over the city and an ice jam was one of the triggers for the flood. While ice jams are common in other parts of the nation, some people aren't sure what causes the natural dams.

Here's a hypothetical situation: Imagine the ice at the Big Sioux River where it crosses under 12th street. The ice is rather thick and as we warm into the summer months it will begin to break up and flow with the river to the south.

Once the moving ice reaches by interstate 229 and Cliff Avenue the river is much more narrow and has many turns involved as well therefore it could create an ice jam and behind that ice ham the water could begin to pool and flow into places such as the Spencer Dog Park.

Right now, the National Weather Service says the chance for minor flooding stands at only 55 percent for Minnehaha County and less for everyone else. There's even better news. The chance for major to moderate flooding is less than 30 percent for most everyone.
