Vets Council Frustrated

Group of South Dakota Veterans says the state needs to name a permanent Director for the Division of Veterans Affairs in South Dakota.

By Robert Wilson

Four Veterans Organizations held a press conference Monday afternoon to say that the Division's acting Director, George Summerside, is the least qualified of any of the candidates originally considered.

Along with the VFW, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Paralyzed Veterans of America were all represented.

They are not saying services to veterans have been affected, but the groups say being without a Permanent Director has not been good.

"We do not believe this is healthy for the veterans of South Dakota, or for the division," said Ron Boyd, American Legion Of South Dakota.

The groups also take issue specifically with Summerside.

They say he has not been upfront about some details of his military service and discharge.

He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1976, but there's other military service he has declined to discuss.

He also was not the top choice of a Veterans Commission who advises the Adjutant General, who appointed Summerside.

"He was at the bottom of the list as far as moving names forward to be director," said Paul Evenson, State Veterans Commission.

A spokesman for Governor Mike Rounds tells KSFY the Governor does not appoint this position.

He also says the Governor has asked the Adjutant General to discuss the issue with the State Veterans Commission the next time the group meets in hopes of resolving this issue as soon as possible.

That meeting is expected to take place sometime in June.
