Usually the rule is you get what you pay for. But is that the case when it comes to shoes? To find out if designer is really better when it comes to your favorite heels, KSFY's Caitlin Haedicke challenged some of our viewers to see if they could tell the difference.
The challenge was designer versus payless. And the question: is there really a difference in comfort when you pay more for a pair of heels ? We did a little shopping of our own and here are the results of our blind test.
First stop on the list was Payless. We picked out a pair of basic black pumps, a staple in almost every woman's closet. The bill came to a grand total of about $17. Then we headed to Macy's for another cute black pump. Luckily, they were on sale, but originally this pair cost almost $70. Now it's time to put them to the test.
We headed to the Empire Mall and covered up the brand of the shoes so people couldn't tell. The one with the square toe is the expensive shoe and the round toe is the Payless shoe. Let's grab a few people and see what they think.
First of all, what do modern day Cinderellas look for when they're buying shoes?
"Well, it's just something that catches my eye, something attractive and comfort," said Mary Kuyper, a shopper at the Empire Mall.
Kelsey Postma said, "Just comfort, something that's not going to be too expensive."
"I usually don't worry about the price, but they have to be comfortable," stated Candace Alloy, an Empire Mall shopper.
As for what they should watch out for, we caught up with Dr. John Forrette, a podiatrist with Sanford Medical Center.
"A lot of high heels don't fit so well, I mean they may be a little more show, or less forgiving, so there'd be less room for those toes of yours to fit in. And there can be problems associated with that," said Dr. John Forrette, a podiatrist with Sanford Medical Center.
Yes, we know, high heels aren't the best choice. But most women are probably going to wear them anyway, to which Dr. Forrette states, "So then the thing that I tell people for any type of shoe purchase, make sure that it fits."
First to try them is Candace Alloy. The Payless shoe is on her left foot and the Macy's shoe on her right. A quick stroll down the hall and.. Caitlin: "So which ones do you think cost more?" Candace: "These ones (pointing to Payless shoe)." She says they're both comfortable, but delighted she likes the cheaper of the two.
Next is Kelly Postma. She says she doesn't mind paying a little more, but at the end of her walk, looks like she'll be paying less. Caitlin: "Would you be surprised if I told you that was a $17 shoe from Payless?" Kelly: "Really? I'm going to have to go get some."
Payless seems to be coming out on top.
Last but not least is Mary Kuyper. Caitlin: "So what do you think, Mary?" Mary: "Well, the left one didn't feel as good as the right one."
Alright, chalk one up for Macy's, but the cheaper shoe comes out the winner in our test. A fact that doesn't surprise our doctor.
"The thing is you can spend $150 on some shoes and still have a poor shoe. It depends on how well it fits you," stated Dr. Forrette.
So in the end, cost doesn't seem to make a difference. But if the shoe fits, wear it!
Dr. Forrette says once you get past a certain heel height, comfort doesn't matter because you can't walk properly. There's also a certain time you should go shoe shopping. Tune in Wednesday for KSFY Live in the Morning to find out when that is.
