Local Shoplifting Case Caused Morning Scare

By Robert Wilson

Employees at the Target Store in Sioux Falls thought they were in the middle of an armed robbery Friday morning. It turned out, what they thought was a weapon is something you might be carrying right now.

Police were first called to Target because workers thought the suspects had a weapon. What they had was a cigarette lighter. Thinking a weapon might be involved, Sioux Falls Police quickly descended on the store. Lieutenant Steve Haney said, "it was first reported that they had knives and they were threatening someone. That's not true. There was a miscommunication."

What they found were two men trying to burn the security features off electronics merchandise and a car that may have held more clues. Haney said, "they had a vehicle in the parking lot that the property crimes detectives will be looking at to determine if there was any additional merchandise."

The men were arrested and gave officers their names. But they had no identification and couldn't give a valid address even though they said they were from Sioux Falls. And according to Haney, "that's what leads you to believe that maybe their names and dates of birth might not be correct."

The arrests happened at one of Sioux Falls busiest stores, causing quite a scene for anyone making a quick stop on their way work Friday morning.

Investigators say the items the suspects are accused of taking are worth about $400. Both will likely face misdemeanor shoplifting charges.
