Communities Pick Up The Pieces After Tornadoes

Now that the storms have passed for most of the country, residents and officials in the damaged areas are beginning to pick up the pieces. From federal aid to the removing of debris, Georgia, Oklahoma and Missouri have a big job ahead if them.

The tornado in Picher, Oklahoma caused major damage to a 20-block area. Homes were leveled, cars overturned and trees ripped from the ground.

"Now there's nothing here.  There's nothing. It's sad," said Sherry Mills, a tornado survivor.

Crews and search dogs here are now looking for survivors or bodies in the piles of debris. Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry declared a state of emergency, stating, "I think this is the worst I've ever seen.  I mean it was so extensive. Just entire neighborhoods wiped out. Nothing left of the homes. Just the concrete foundation."

The storm moved to southwestern Missouri hitting an area near Seneca hard. Here, many were left to sift through piles of wreckage and debris, wading through what's left of a town now in need of federal help.

"We've said prayers out lives for the families and those that lost their lives and the federal government will be moving hard to help and be in touch with governor's," said President George W. Bush.

Storms in Georgia led to the destruction of over a hundred homes.

"We have counted 173 homes that have been damaged to some degree. Of those 173, 53 have been determined to be uninhabitable," said Clayton County Fire Chief Alex Cohilas.

Georgia Power says more than 70-thousand customers were without power across Georgia, mostly in the metro Atlanta area and Macon area.

Already this year, tornadoes have claimed more lives than in all of 2007.
