Iowa Candy Assault

By Associated Press

A 20-year-old Des Moines man is charged with assaulting a police officer - with candy.  Officials say Sean McGuire, a student at Drake University, was arrested early Sunday at a convenience store. He allegedly threw several M&M's at a Des Moines police officer, who was investigating a hit-and-run accident involving an intoxicated man.

Police reports say Drake security guards on the scene noticed M&M candies falling on the ground around the officer. When the officer turned around one of the candies hit his shoulder.  McGuire claimed he threw the candy because he was "sticking up for his friend," who apparently was the man suspected in the accident.

I agree with 'widflower's' statement, the rest of the statements so far show that they just don't get it!

Dear wildflower do you think throwing a M&M is comparible to slaughtering people on the highway? WOW.

" Wildflower " you definetly need some help. This is why some american laws are sad and need to be changed. This was not a real assault and its sad to see this young man's life hurt by what a ' police officer ' claims is assault.

Throwing anything at any human being is disrespectful. The officer was doing his/her job. We do not throw objects at our minister while he/she is preaching or a daycare provider while he/she is rocking our baby or a security or law officers while they are protecting us from drunks who are running into our vehicles and driving on our roads and slaughtering our loved ones by crashing into them while under the influence. Disrespect IS a form of violence.

This isn't right. I thought about it and I don't think hitting a policeman with an m and m is assault. Hitting anybody with an m and m isn't an assault. I think the policeman should have just ignored it because it was only an m and m and I don't think he was hurt by it. The story said it hit the police on the shoulder. Nobody could be hurt by one. Now the student will get a police record for throwing an m and m at a policeman. That could really hurt a student for when he tries to get a job.
