Hyperion Opponents Plan for Fight

Hyperion Refining officials spoke to the Union County Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday about a proposed oil refinery. The presentation featured drawings of the potential site such as the one pictured here.

By Associated Press

Opponents of a crude oil refinery proposed for Union County say they have a plan ready if voters endorse the county commission's rezoning of land that Hyperion Resources would use for the project.  Ed Cable of the group "Save Union County" says there are many ways to impede the refinery if county voters approve the rezoning on June 3rd. He says each of the various environmental permits the refinery would need would allow 30 days for public input.

Cable says opponents would use that time to point out perceived flaws to the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources.  Cable also says an environmental impact statement would offer "many avenues for resistance."

Hyperion executives have said they'll leave Union County without a fight if voters reject the rezoning.

Ed can you come fill my car up with gas? Perhaps you can provide a couple thousand jobs and a few million in income for the region. Ed, have you heard of Ronald Reagen and trickle down exonomics? Ed, it works! It is where the money for your welfare check comes from!
