Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton told about 500 farmers, students and others gathered on a farm near Bath today that she'd make agriculture a priority if elected. The U.S. Senate today approved a new Farm Bill. The House passed it yesterday. Congress has enough votes to override a veto. Clinton encouraged President Bush not veto the legislation.
Quoting the former first lady: "I believe saying no to the Farm Bill is saying no to rural America," -- end quote. She spoke on the front porch of the Dennis Jones farm north of Bath. Jones told her the federal farm program must be streamlined and flexible because the agriculture of today won't be the agriculture of 10 years from now.
Clinton says presumptive Republican nominee John McCain would continue many of Bush's policies. And she says even though she and fellow Democratic contender Barack Obama agree on much, there also are stark differences between them.
Barack Obama is scheduled for two appearances in South Dakota tomorrow - the first is at 11am in Watertown; the second will be held at the Sioux Falls Arena. Doors open at 5pm and the program is scheduled for 7pm.
