Wife Of Man Killed In Moody County Sought Protection Order

By Robert Wilson

It appears the estranged wife of a man killed after shooting a 12 gage shotgun into a home near Colman Sunday night feared for her safety. The shooting happened at 22693 467th Avenue in rural Colman. 32 year-old Jason Lee Clough was shot and killed by someone in the house after authorities say he fired three shots.

Inside the home were his estranged wife Jessica, her daughter and Jessica's parents.

Back in March, Clough's estranged wife asked for the Temporary Protection order here at the Moody County Courthouse in Flandreau, saying she feared for her safety, her family's safety, and the safety of her baby.

Tuesday, two days after the shooting, the home where it happened appeared to have a door frame and window boarded up. Residents inside didn't want to talk about the incident. But documents related to a temporary protection order, and later a permanent order revealed why his estranged wife, Jessica, feared Clough.

Without explaining what the facility is, Jessica wrote, "At the Camden House they tested him for drugs and he was positive for meth, cocaine and pot. Child protection doesn't feel that Jason can be alone with the baby."

Around Moody County, most people still know very little about the shooting. Sean Shortman told us he is a little relieved knowing a shooter isn't on the loose. "It's good that, feel a little safer that it's all taken care of and everybody knows what happened."

When Jessica asked for the first protection order, she asked that it be made effective immediately, saying, "He will hurt me and my baby if he comes to find me."

According to the latest press release from the Moody County Sheriff's Office, the investigation will continue.

Jim, maybe what it came down to is either Matt get shot or Jason get shot, and apparently Matt got the shot off before he himself got shot. To me no matter where Jason got shot, that situation in itself is a defensive shot.

Lucy, the thing is that the man was shot in the head. A headshot is not a defensive shot, it's a kill shot. You tell me who could shot someone in the head while ducking shots. If you have time to aim a riffle to shoot someone in the head with one single shot, then there can't be that much immenent danger can there. But I guess it's a shoot first, as questions, and pile it on thick later kind of world isn't it?

Are worthless because of feminist extremists who use them as weapons in divorces to seperate fathers from their children. If this guy wanted to get to her a piece of paper isn't going to stop him.

Where were his good & loving qualities when he was trying shoot his wife & baby girl? And Jim ur talking abt taking the law into his own hands? Pretty sure the law was already broken when Jason was firing shots at innocent ppl. Did you really think they would sit there for 20-30 min waiting for the police to get there & cross their fingers hope they don't get killed.. good thing they didnt or there would be 5 dead people instead of 1. THINK ABOUT IT!!

I agree, Jim. I knew the deceased as well. His good and loving qualities far exceeded anything negative that is being said. How easy to do when he can't defend himself. RIP, Jason!!! We love you!

Anyone shoots at or even near my house better believe there will be return fire.

Ann, when I said there was more to the story, I meant that there are some things being said about the deceased that were either untrue or don't add up. It's very easy to pile on a story about someone who is no longer here to refute it. But alas, it's for the law to determine what is factual and what was necessary. May God bless.

Couple more things, Brady the cops were called, how were they supposed to get away from the house? They live in the country not like they could have ran to the neighbors without being seen. Jim you are right there is more to the story and I think those of you that are critizing the family would be surprised at what they have dealt with in the past with Jason, and even the final moments that night. I don't think Matt took the law into his own hands, between life and death, he chose life.

Unless any of you have been in the house (post-incident)and have personally talked to or know those involved, maybe you should be more grateful you weren't in this situation and leave the poor family alone. And Frank Im not sure what you mean my any "marks" considering there were three bullet holes inside the house and unless you were there you wouldn't know how close they were to hitting their mark.I dont think DR was condemning Jason for having a mental illness, it could explain his thinking

Are you telling me if someone showed up at your house with a loaded gun firing it at the house your family is in wther the bullets hit anything or not, you would call the police and leave? While the shooter is outside with his loaded gun?? I would hope EVERYONE would take the same steps Jessica's defender did!!I am so sick of people defending the man that thought it was ok to not only break the restraining order but do it while carrying a gun! Brady- DBSS! Frank- think about your comment!! dumb!

Lucy, there is indeed more to the story. And some of the story was untrue as well. All people involved should be prayed for, but you should never take the law into your own hands.

Wednesday, May 28 at 2:13 PM Frank wrote ...

DR, isn't it strange that the gun shots didn't make ANY mark, let alone their mark? You would have to be a pretty bad aim with a shot gun to not hit anything.

Wednesday, May 28 at 2:09 PM Brady wrote ...

DR, you should not condemn the man for having mental illness. You can't just gun a man down for being mentally ill. The law says they should have called the police and gotten away from the house. You can't take the law into your own hands.

Listen Kim, i know the deceased personally and he was a poor husband and father and thats the only side to it. Its sad that it had to happen this way. Matt is a hero for saving his family and any good man would protect his family at all costs. Its very sad that Jason had so many problems that he would have felt it necessary to try and kill 5 innocent ppl. there are alot of details that ppl dont know. Please pray for the family and let them grieve in peace.

By that, I mean someone unfortunately dies. How sad. Lucky no one else did. Let's put this to rest!

Kim....I think he told his story when he fired a 12 gauge shotgun in the house three times...

Tuesday, May 27 at 8:31 PM DR wrote ...

Jess feared for her life and that of her baby. Jason had mental illness. I can honestly say, I would have done the same thing had I feared for my families life. Thank God the shots at the house didn't make their mark!!

Make sure you look at everything! There are two sides to every story. Too bad the deceased can't tell his.
