Bridge Should Re-Open Next Week

By Associated Press

Repair work on the Meridian Bridge over the Missouri River at Yankton is going well, and traffic should be restored next week.

The bridge was closed for repairs after an inspection found advanced rust on gusset plates.  South Dakota Transportation Department engineer Ron Peterson says the work is going well.  The bridge was closed June 17th for repairs.  The Meridian bridge had been limited to vehicles under 10 tons for several weeks because of corrosion on the gussets that connect steel beams on the undercarriage.

A replacement for the 84-year-old bridge is under construction and it's expected to open this fall.
