Road Projects: Funding Slowed

By Dawn Crawley

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is meeting with people in Aberdeen.  The DOT faces some major financial issues and may not be able to do all the projects it had planned.

"Because of funding issues you may see more road construction projects like this one at Mina Lake, repairs and maintenance. The Department of Transportation says at this point they just can't afford to take on brand new projects."

"With the high cost of fuel our revenues are actually down or level and the money just isn't going as far. Our construction is costing more and we just can't get as many projects done."

The Department of Transportation managed to squeeze in the bridge construction at Mina Lake.

Melissa Steger, President of the Mina Lake Association, is thankful but understands there may be cutbacks in the future.

"Well it is bothersome if we have roads that are in need of major repair but with the economy sitting in the situation that we are it is understandable that money is an issue."

High construction costs and pending federal funding have caused the DOT to focus mainly on road maintenance.

"For the most part I thought the roads were o.k. for this year anyway. Hopefully that continues in the years to come."
