3 Kids Hurt In ATV Crash Near Hayti

By Drew Sandholm

Three children are hurt tonight after a pickup truck hit the ATV  they were riding. The accident happened 1 mile north of County Highway 28 on 446th Avenue, southwest of Hayti. The accident involved a 7 year old, a 4 year old and a 2 year old. A 15 year old was driving the pickup. At least 2 of the children are being treated at Sioux Falls hospitals tonight.

The children had been driving the ATV on their driveway , which was gravel. They had turned onto the county road when the pickup hit the ATV.  Authorities say the 15 year old saw two horses, and took his eyes off the road for a few seconds. That's when the crash happened. The accident hits close to home for Hamlin County Sheriff Dan Mack.  He says, "I know the kids, their parents, and I know their father and his parents, and they're super great people. My heart goes out to them for the pain they are going through at this time."

The 15 year old was not injured. He walked away from the scene.

Were these parents brought up West River? From the looks of their parenting skills I think so. This is a disgrace.

Why even write something so unintelligent. Seriously, i may not practice religion. However, others do and that shouldn't be said. Just because a tragedy happened doesn't mean their isn't a god. It could just simply mean it was her time to go. As sad as it is maybe thats what it means. I myself am not a genious when it comes to the bible or human life however, to get through sad/terrible things like this you have to believe their is something better after death.

It's not up to us to judge them. We do not know the circumstances. They should all be in our prayers.

May God Bless you all in this time of need. I must say I am appalled that 3 children were on this ATV alone.Parents need to take more action in their childs life. This was an accident that should have never happened. My 10 yr old drove an ATV with her father going 5 mph and I was scared.I dont mean to sound harsh but these kids had no bussiness being on this ATV alone.ATV's are not toys or babysiters. I hope you all recover well from this accident and My prayers go out to all involved.God Bless.

We, of course, may never understand why God allows such events to happen, but we must believe there is a reason. It is certainly a powerful reminder of how fragile life is and how we all, young and old should always be prepared and never unprepared to meet our maker. The prayers of many, coast-to-coast, are with both of these families that they make it through this tremendous trial.

My youngest child is 9 and has been driving cars since he was 6, there are children in the world that have amazing talent and can do almost anything. I'm sure these children were supervised, things happen sooooo fast you don't see them coming. I pray for this family, and we shouldn't judge these parents, obviously they know their child was responsible enough to give rides, anyone come down on the kid not paying attention to the road?

Why would you let a 7 year old give a 4 and to year old a ride without some suppervision? And did they have helmetson. There are lots of kids killed on those things a year. I have three kids of my own and wouldn't let them ride alone. I hope their injures heal fast. I hope their parent learned to watch them better. They are a percious gift.

I've fit 5 people on an ATV...we were being careful. I started driving anything I could at a younger age than 7. It's no one's fault, accidents happen. woulda, shoulda, coulda, doesn't help now. Prayers to the family of the children.

I myself would never let a 7 year old drive an ATV.

Hope the children are okay. One rule on the farm should always be "never go onto the county road if you are playing or riding anything" People just dont pay enough attention.
