Two West Nile Cases In Brown County

By Dawn Crawley

The West Nile season has started and Brown County already has two confirmed cases. That's out of a total of four in the entire state.  Brown county officials are now taking steps to control the mosquito population.

Officials are keeping a close eye on how many mosquitoes are in the area. Brown county has the most reported cases of West Nile so far this year and it was the same last year. Counts are being performed daily from five different areas across Aberdeen.

So far, the mosquito count is lower than last week but officials say that won't last long.

"We've got some good rains here the last couple of days so we are anticipating a flush of mosquitoes coming in. it will be seven days after our last rain when we will see mosquitoes coming in," says Mark Hoven, Park Superintendent.

The deadly West Nile virus comes along with the mosquitoes.

"Probably six months to recover from it before I really felt I had my strength back. I never realized it could happen to me but now I try to protect myself with spray when I go out especially at nightime," says James Kaiser, a West Nile victim.

The bug spray, extra clothing, and avoiding peak mosquito activity are all necessary.

"It's just really ripe for the mosquitoes to breed so we are going to be in the height of the battle of West Nile for a long time."
