Fight Continues at Proposed Hog Farm Site

By Associated Press

The Yankton Sioux Tribe is trying to set up regulatory hurdles to a controversial hog farm being built on private land a few miles from tribal headquarters at Marty.

A tribal attorney has filed a protest with state officials on a decision to grant Long View Farms a water permit.  The lawyer also has lodged a complaint with the Environmental Protection Agency, asking it to investigate if the hog farm will pose a health and pollution risk to tribal members.

The farm could house an average of 3,350 sows and produce 70,000 piglets a year. The young pigs would be later raised on farms in Iowa.

These places have been shut down recently...in Iowa of all places. I hope this gives all you people who believe the Yankton sioux are whinners (what a way to spell it), something to consider. Personally, a job isn't worth my child's life, at least that's the way i look at it. call me a whinner, it doesn't matter, my child's life is more important than that.

The tribe owns much of the land around the hog farm so why shouldn't they have a right to oppose this operation? They are also crossing Tribal Boundaries to get their supplies to the site like they own the land they cross and yet the tribe doesn't have the right to complain?

Them people !!! That attitude is one of the problems in this state. It being near a reservation is the only reason people think it should be ok for them to put it there. A hog farm was stopped in IA. I didn't see so many people complaining about "those whiners". sheeesh

If you are even close to tribal land the big deal is that maybe a few of them should think about getting a job.

I say let the hog farm go forward and if damage is done then take them for all their money and if not no harm done and more jobs created unlees all of this would've made the hog farmers racist by the time this is all said and done by not hiring Natives.

why does it or why do you always bring race into it it's got nothing to do with it. it's health and well being of the people around it.

Anonymous, must you bring race into this? Also if you read it correctly at no time will there be 73,000 hogs there, once the piglets are weaned and are healthy they will be shipped to a different facility. Last but not least the regulations this facility are equal to if not more stringent than those of the city of Marty. In other words the city itself is required to do less than this hog confinment will to protect tribal members from polution and health dangers.

I am sure that a lot of people would be singing a different tune if there were going to be 73,000 hogs a mile from where their kids were at while they are at work. And to the working person that is tired of whiners, are you typing your message at work being as you posted at 9AM? It really helps the cause of the farm when it has the backing of a race that has control of the legislative and judicial systems and is still maintaining the arrogant stance that "pa" taught them. Disgusting.
