Gas Prices Fall Around The Area

By Leslie Rupiper

The average price of gas in South Dakota has dropped 6 cents since Monday. It's some much needed relief after watching prices soar for much of the summer. This is a good kind of sticker shock for drivers. They want to see the gas prices keep falling, and they're not the only ones. A gas station manager we talked to wants to see the pain at the pump ease up, too.

We caught up with Myron Fuerst while he was fueling up for a trip to Rapid City. He's glad this fill-up is cheaper than it would've been on Monday. Myron says, "Yeah, that helps. It helps quite a bit. Even 4 or 5 cents makes a lot of difference." People are taking notice of the price difference on the big signs. The manager of Taylor's Pantry in Sioux Falls says it means more people are pulling up to the pump. Heather Boysen says, "Gas prices started falling a couple of days ago and we've seen an increase in our customer flow since gas prices have gone down." Heather says most people think when gas prices are high, the gas stations are making money. She says for her, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Heather says, "I don't know who's making the money, but it's certainly not the gas station owners."

Prices at the pump are down because the price of crude oil has dropped. Experts say there's also been a big drop in demand. But Carrie Morehouse isn't among them. She says, "I don't pay attention to the gas prices. I just get gas when I need to." Myron Fuest, too, says daily life just requires him to drive. But when prices fall like they have this week, he's all the more willing to get behind the wheel. Myron says, "I think it could come down some more, and I think it'd be a good deal."

Gas prices are still a buck higher than they were last year at this time. But the folks we talked to say they think this could be the start of something, and prices might keep falling for a while. Prices are down 11 cents in Minnesota since Monday, and 7 cents in Iowa.
