Stanley County sheriff's deputies have shot and killed a pit bull after it attacked two people in Fort Pierre.

Sheriff Brad Rathbun says the incident happened Monday at a home where a family was watching the dog for someone else.  The pit bull apparently broke loose from a chain and chased some children.  A 7-year-old girl was attacked, and the dog also turned on the girl's 58-year-old grandmother when she tried to help.

Rathbun says the two were bitten several times and were taken to the hospital.  The sheriff says deputies shot the dog when it threatened them.  The dog's body will be tested for rabies.

I have had nothing but pits and they are great family dogs. They are like any other dog but just have a bad name. Now if that would have been the beloved lab that would have done that it would be no big deal. It is all the way that they are raised not the breed. SO dont dis them unless you have owned one. My kids love JADA and i wouldnt trade her for the world.

The pug that mauled me required a trip to the hospital and got me 56 titches. And the man who pulled the dog off of me, who happened to be a local EMT, got his hand pretty well mangled and needed stitches too. I breed Basset Hounds. Are you gonna tell me ALL of them drool? Cause that's total ignorance of a breed, turst me, not all Bassets drool, and never once has any of MY dogs been involved in biting a human. I, unlike some, know how to train and weed out bad influences.

Well that’s unfortunate. How come it only makes the news when it’s a pit bull/terrier mix, because ya know that's what they really are don't you? Couldn’t find a different picture than the one used from the Leola dog breed banning story? These dogs are the most loyal creatures around even less hyper than your every day lab. I love my dog and raise them right and socialize them just like you would with any dog and you'll have no problems. Hey i have an idea lets ban wishbone he's a terrier.

I am sorry for those of you who can judge a book by its cover. I am a pitbull owner..ANY dog can turn if its not properly trained. Just because its a pit it made the news. I feel for the people that got attacked. NOONE deserves that. I pray for their recovery. When I decided to become a pitparent I made sure I had the time and patience to love and care for it properly. As any animal parent should.

Pit Bulls are Pit Bulls no one knows what any dog is really thinking but the fact that they are capable of causing death should be reason enough for them to be banned as pets.

I think people need to pass a test or take classes before getting a pet. It would not only prevent some animal attacks but a lot of animal abuse and neglect. There are people out there that just don't deserve to have pets. Pit bulls in themselves are killers, neglectful owners make them that way. I hope the little girl and grandmother are both ok!

I just don't see how you can say if it's the owner improperly training the dog or not. All species trained good or bad have that "What if" for crying out loud. This is too bad for all involved.

tattooedgirl, the dog was shot because it came after the officers. and anonymous (12:55pm) i'm not exactly sure the chihuahua you were bitten by bit you (and others) several times. these dogs are stereotyped for a reason, regardless of the training involved. when there's a pattern in behavior that becomes a problem. if we cant handle training them properly and they continue to act this way then yes, they're obviously going to continue to be stereotyped, as they should be.

It is a fact that some dogs - like pits - are built different than others. The pit bull has a jaw that is very strong and this type of behavior is bred into them. Not all pits are mean but they sure can be and no amount of training will ever change that. Pit bulls (as well as other breeds) should never be allowed around children. The story indicated that this animal was not chained up at the owners home @ the time of the vicious attack - I hope the "friend" has good insurance as well.

Any dog can be trained improperly and can attack people. Pit bulls are totally stereotyped along with dobermans, rotties and bull mastiffs. I got attacked by a pug a year ago and it left scars all over me - yet that dog wasn't killed for attacking me. I know some sweet, wonderfully well trained pits and it's usally not the dogs fault, but the owner's improper training and lack of loving the creature. It is truly awful to hear about one of man's best friend's turning bad.

Yet another example of an improperly trained Pit Bull. There should be some kind of test to see if you will have enough time to properly train your dog before you can purchase one. I hope the family is OK.

Why would the owner not have control of a dog like that? I hope the owner had insurance or a good attorney!

HELLO PEOPLE! There is a reason why PIT BULLS are banned from certain towns... they are not a trust worthy dog and are known for attacking humans.
