Doctors believe golfers are in the "high risk" category for knee injuries.

By Brian Allen

When you think of knee injuries caused by sports.... you may think of runners or basketball players.

But people don't think of golf as a sport prone to knee injuries... but some doctors are saying that golfers are at higher risk.

A day on the links can be a good way to get some exercise, but experts say don't be fooled. Golf isn't necessarily a mild-mannered sport.

"We don't think of it as sort of a high-impact sport but actually the rapid rotation of the body can actually predispose golfers to knee injury." Especially the knees. Orthopedist Wiemi Douoguih says cartilage and tendons surrounding the knee are at high risk for injury. "Twisting motions at a rapid rate can lead to failure of the cartilage pads, and ultimately to knee pain and even arthritis in some situations."

Douoguih recommends seeing a doctor if you feel a sudden onset of pain because it could signal a rupture or tear. A gradual increase in pain is another reason for concern. He tells patients to strengthen their knees to avoid injury in the first place. "Simple exercises such as squats or lunges don't even need to use weights. You can just use your own body weight. Done two or times a week, can help improve the strength of the leg."

...and hopefully your golf game.

If you remember... Tiger Woods walked away from the US Open this past June with a trophy and a season ending knee injury needing surgery.
