Major Milestone For Mni Wiconi

By Associated Press

Government officials and members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe are gathering this morning for a ceremony marking the first time the giant Mni Wiconi water project has delivered Missouri River water to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

South Dakota's congressional delegation is joining federal officials and 3 Lakota tribes for the ceremony in Wanblee.

The Mni Wiconi Rural Water System will provide quality water to more than 50,000 people in 9 counties and 3 American Indian reservations west of the Missouri River.

It's been pumping river water for several years to much of the area, including the Lower Brule and Rosebud Sioux reservations.
