A school directory put out by The Shopping News in Sioux Falls is stirring up some controversy. Not for the Sioux Falls School District information you'll find inside, but for an advertisement that's on one of the pages.
The ad that got some parents' attention is for the Alpha Center in Sioux Falls and reads, "abortion hurts women". Some thought the ad showed the Sioux Falls School District taking sides in the abortion debate because it's mixed right in with a lot of school-related information.
But Superintendent Pam Homan says the school district had nothing to do with that ad, or any of the others inside the school directory. It's published by The Shopping News.
Sioux Falls Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pam Homan says, "They are fully in control and responsible and have complete rights to the entire content in the directory." Homan says that fact is printed on page 6 of the directory, and she read it for us. "The paid advertisements in this publication are not the opinion or views of the Sioux Falls School District or the publisher."
We tried to talk to folks at The Shopping News to get their take on the matter. But they directed all questions to their attorney, who's office was closed.
Carol Simmons' children went through the Sioux Falls School District. She thinks the entire controversy might be "much ado about nothing". But she believes no matter what you think about the ad, it could be used as a tool.
Carol says, "I think it does offer an opportunity to offer some conversation to some older children, if they want to know what it is, what does it mean? It doesn't mean you have to be for it or against it."
Dr. Homan says this is not the school district's official school directory, and they've never had issues with it in the man year's it's been published. She says the district doesn't receive money or pay money for the publication.
