More Than A Safer Ride Across The River

The Discovery bridge that replaces the Meridian bridge in Yankton is finally nearing completion. But, when it's finished it may mean more than just a safer drive across the river.

City officials are hoping that it'll bring a boost for businesses and an economic impact all across the area.

Cyndi Hunhoff is owner of Lisa's Fashion in Yankton. She got started in the business nearly 20 years ago and although she says there's nothing greater, she says it's also been a challenge.

Cyndi Hunhoff says, "It's a struggle in this day and age with the big box stores in the world, but we emphasize more on customer service."

But even with great service, keeping up with the bills isn't easy.

Cyndi Hunhoff says, "We are really seeing a decline in the amount of people that are coming in from out of town."

But she says a new bridge might change that by encouraging more interest from out of town shoppers. Sen. John Thune, (R) South Dakota, who played a role in securing funds for the bridge, agrees.

Sen. John Thune says, "You've got to have good transportation to accommodate economic growth and to create jobs and this is a part of that process."

He says people are looking to live in communities like Yank ton that offer access to the outdoors without the traffic and congestion, and this bridge would bring that to them. Cyndi Hunhoff says that's good for business.

Cyndi Hunhoff says, "Economically, yeah. It'll bring some more traffic. It'll be something new and people always like to see something new."
