Brookings May Double Wheel Tax

By Ellen Serr

Brookings County officials are scheduled today to consider a doubling of the wheel tax, which is now $2 per wheel, or a maximum of $8 per vehicle.

County commissioners say they need the extra revenues for road and bridge work.  Doubling of the tax would raise an extra $191,000 a year for those projects.  Even if the commission votes to increase the wheel tax, it could be referred to a public vote if petitions are circulated and enough signatures are obtained.

Forty of South Dakota's 66 counties impose a wheel tax.  Twenty-three of them have the $16-per-vehicle maximum tax allowed by state law.
