The number of Tuberculosis cases in Nobles County, Minnesota is climbing again.

In June, we told you the city had seven active cases. Now the number of people with T-B is at 67 with another 31 possibly infected.

T-B is a bacterial infection which targets the lungs and can be spread through coughing and sneezing and in Worthington, people know the risk is there.

"I have an 8th grader, a 5th grader and a 2nd grader." Mom Janna Williams has memorized the symptoms and is watching for them in her three kids as are local health officials.

"We've had what's referred to as an outbreak of Tuberculosis." While that sounds bad, Nobles County health administrator Brad Meyer says "outbreak" is a clinical definition, used whenever two or more people are infected.

Of the 67 T-B cases under review, 5 are active and contagious: 62 are latent, meaning they are infected with the bacteria but show no symptoms...yet. "At some point that germ could wake up and make them infectious."

Health officials caution while some in Nobles County have the T-B bacteria, this is not a situation where the illness is running rampant.

The three main T-B symptoms to watch for are continuous coughing, night sweats and rapid weight loss.
