Perjury Charge Dropped

By Associated Press

The prosecutor in Meade County has dropped a perjury count against a Seattle detective charged with the nonfatal shooting of a Hells Angels biker at last month's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Authorities say Ronald Smith shot Joseph McGuire of Imperial Beach, Calif., in a crowded bar.  They are both charged with assault and weapons violations.  State's Attorney Jesse Sondreal says the grand jury also indicted Smith for perjury when evidence suggested he used his police-issue gun and not his own weapon.

But the prosecutor says a firearms trace shows Smith did use his personal gun.  McGuire is a member of the Hells Angels. Smith and the four other defendants are members of the Iron Pigs, a national group of police and firefighters.
