No Names On Your Jersey

Many kids leagues no longer put names on jerseys to protect identities.

Parents are okay with the idea.

But some young soccer players say the league's decision to take their first name off their jerseys... isn't cool.

Tonight, a look at what's behind the move.

Soccer season is well underway, it is the 13th season coaching for Mike Pickard but a first without first names on the player's jerseys. "Probably the biggest reason I always put the first names on is for the younger ones. So that the parents all knew who the players were on the field and then they could encourage the kids by name. Everybody got to know each other a little better."

For the first time in the club's history, first names are being left off all kids' jerseys. The club says safety is the number one reason. "Some emails, as well as some phone calls, from concerned parents that we permitted first names or nicknames on jersey's."

After a recommendation from the police department, the club voted to eliminate first names or nicknames on jerseys. They fear a child predator could use the child's first name to get their attention and draw them away. "I think it probably is a little over protective, but I think it is a good over protection."

Parents say they think it is a good idea... but admit it takes some of the personalization out of it.

i think its a good idea to leave the first name off....you don't let your children post their full names on the internet so why let them do it in society? what if a petifile is there watching and decides he likes your child? i mean seriously he just got a huge piece of info on them.
