School Bus Crash Near Elkton

By KSFY News

Three people were taken to the hospital near Elkton this morning after a school bus got hit by a Ford Explorer.

The Brookings County Sheriff's Department says there were no kids on the bus.  The crash happened at the intersection of 218th Street and 487th Avenue.  Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the bus had almost made it through the intersection when a Ford Explorer struck the side of the bus.  The bus tipped over onto its side in the roadway.  The sheriff says the intersection is uncontrolled, with corn fields on three of the four sides.

The driver and three passengers of the Explorer were taken to Avera Medical Hospital in Flandreau.  The driver of the bus was not injured.

KSFY News has a crew in Elkton and will have a live report at 6:00pm.

If you read the story, you will notice that it is an uncontrolled intersection. The story does not say who had the right of way. We don't know who is at fault or if anyone is. Anybody who has driven country roads this time of year are at risk with the crops and unfortunately lack of signs on township roads. Get on your board members, and state reps. for help with the cost. We need signs! Not a day goes by you wonder who is it gonna be today. Just slow down 35-40 MPH is plenty.SLOW DOWN!!!!

how could they have not seen them? If it hit the back of the bus, they must have seen something, I hate when people dont take responsibility, corn fields scmornfields PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AND GIANT YELLOW BUSES!!

There are cornfields surrounding all sides, They didnt see each other and no they werent going that fast, 40 mph. I know the people who hit it, my very good friends. They both swerved to the ditch and the back end of the bus collided with the Explorer. They are lucky to be alive. I am so greatful that God was watching over them.

well i would say it is more likeley, that the bus get into an accident then catch fire..wouldnt you?? And i would say that the bus driver should make sure they are belted in, or have a bus attendent

people just need to be more cautious when traveling gravel roads, i.e. slowing down for intersections, if the corn is too tall to tell if a car is coming down the road then the obvious solution would be to slow down. seatbelts on a school bus are a good idea but would be too hard to regulate as far as making the kids wear them, most of the kids probably wouldnt wear them anyways

How in the h$$$ can you smoke a school bus in the side so hard that you tip it over? You have to be moving at a good clip.

Seatbelts can be a huge hinderance if something like this were to happen with kids on the bus. If the bus caught fire, there would be no way to get to all the kids and get their seatbelts undone and get them safely off the bus. Seatbelts are NOT practical on a school bus.

I agee that we need to get the children in seatbelts. We are told over and over that our children and us need to have seatbelts on and it is the law and then we put children on a bus without doesn't make sense to me at all!!!!!!

Yes, buses are big and yellow, but the corn is taller than the bus right now...they probably never saw each other I pray everyone involved will be ok
