Voters in Dell Rapids are deciding on a multi-million dollar bond issue that school leaders say would improve the district's schools. It's the second time around for the vote. This bond issue is worth $17.3 million. In May, voters defeated a measure worth $16 million. School leaders say the price of improvements will only go up if voters wait any longer.
If you take a look at the ballot, the options are pretty clear. Voters are either voting yes or no for a $17.3 million bond issue that would build a new elementary school in Dell Rapids and expand the middle school and high school. But this is the second time around for this vote, which means it's not as clear-cut for some Dell Rapids voters."
Jessie Stubbe lives in the Dell Rapids School District, but her two boys aren't yet in school. Jessie says, "I have a 3 1/2 year old and a one year old." But Jessie supports the bond issue and what it means for the future of the school district. She says, "I would like to see my kids go to a good school and I know a lot of people don't like the money part of it, but I'd like my kids to have a nice school to go to and all that."
But other voters feel the school district could do more to trim down the district's needs, so the bond wouldn't be so big. Willis Madetzke says, "I think there's a lot of waste in there. They could cut back a lot. There are a lot of frills." But school leaders say they're trying to use each possible space, and that even includes the stage in the Dell Rapids Elementary School. It's now been transformed into a music room, but it's only about half the size of a regular classroom. Superintendent Tom Ludens says the school is at around 95% capacity, and is expected to keep growing. He says building costs have already gone up since the last vote. That's why Jessie Stubbe wants to see this vote pass, so prices don't go up anymore. Jessie says, "As long is it's not much higher than it is now, it's not bad." Polls close at 7 p.m. We'll have the results for you tonight on KSFY Live at 10.
