Sioux Falls Leaders Say Even If Possible, Resort Planned for Larchwood Area Wouldn't Be Good Fit in South Dakota

A casino that will bring hundreds of jobs and millions in revenue is coming to northwest Iowa. But could that revenue have come across the border to South Dakota?

Gaming is already big business in South Dakota, and wednesday some local leaders told KSFY a 200 acre resort casino just wouldn't fit in well in the Sioux Falls area. Mayor Dave Munson said, 'I don't think that for this area it would be a real match, but for the Larchwood area, I think for that area it really benefits them."

Resort developers say the Larchwood site is the only one they considered. Teri Ellis-Schmidt of the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau says it will push them to make their products even better. "From the standpoint of someone who's out selling the community, eventually I may say I wish it was here. You know it just depends on what they end up doing with it."

Around Sioux Falls many told KSFY they also think the project will benefit the entire area, whether it's in Iowa or South Dakota. Tom Pischke said, "I guess i'm indifferent to that. Surrounding states have the same opportunity to make that decision too."

Legally a casino resort like the one proposed for Larchwood wouldn't be allowed in South Dakota without changing the state constitution. Lawmakers did change the constitution to allow gaming in deadwood, but other than that casino's are only allowed on tribal land.

change the state constitution so others can open a casino instead of just deadwood and tribal land. Others want to have a piece of the pie also

This will benefit Sioux Falls Eastside. This will be the shot in the arm that the developers need to get moving on their proposed projects.
