Sturgis Passes Pit Bull Ordinance

Sioux Falls authorities investigating another apparent dog bit.

By Associated Press

The Sturgis City Council has passed an ordinance regulating pit bulls.

Owners of the dogs must register them with the city and restrain them at all times.  They also must carry liability insurance on their pit bulls.  Opponents at Monday's council session argued that it's unfair to single out a particular breed.  But Sturgis Mayor Maury LaRue said aggressive pit bulls have been a problem in Sturgis, and the intent of the ordinance is to make their owners responsible.

The council vote for the pit bull ordinance was unanimous.

What Sturgis does not realize is there is a huge network of responsible pit bull owners compared to the minority of irresponsible owners. The irresponsible owners will continue to do what they do while responsible owners, like me, will simply avoid spending any money in Sturgis, Tea, Leola or any other town that passes laws like this. Good job Sturgis. See if you can alienate a few million more people at your next meeting.

Good ordinance I think it is more then fair. Why single them out?? Because they have a history of being a aggressive and harmful animal. It's more then fair. When is the last time you heard of a poodle attacking someone??

I agree with there argument. I is unfair to single out a particular breed. All dogs can be aggressive, its there nature.
