The group, Citizens For A Responsible Sales Tax, says during these tough economic times, the city of Sioux Falls hasn't been tightening it's belt the way it's citizens have had to.

They say it's time for city government to give tax payers a break.

"We feel that they're spending it on special interest projects right now," said Petition Drive Co-Chair Theresa Stehly.

Right now the city's sales tax rate is 1.92%

Last month the city council voted to raise it to 2% next year.

If passed, this proposal would roll it back to 1.90% in 2010.

Mayor Dave Munson, a supporter of the increase, says the city worked with developers to craft an spending plan where the city and developers would share the costs of new roads.

He doesn't like this proposal.

He says the money is needed and well spent.

"The thing is, my question is, back to them, what is their plan for building roads and keeping roads up in Sioux Falls, and continuing to develop and growing Sioux Falls," said Mayor Munson.

Supporters of the initiative say the think they'll need about six-thousand signatures to get it on the ballot.

They hope to have the question before voters in a May election for School Board members.
