Immigration Raid At Dairy

By Brian Allen

Late breaking details of a federal immigration raid Wednesday afternoon at multiple dairy operations in Veblen.

Here's what we know right now:

27 people were arrested: the result of a three month investigation involving 6 law enforcement agencies, including federal immigration and customs enforcement.

13 of the people arrested face identity theft charges tonight while the other 14 are accused of being in the country illegally.

25 minutes ago, i spoke with tim counts, a spokesman for ICE. "This investigation began about three months ago when the Highway Patrol stopped a man in August. He presented suspicious documents during a traffic stop. The patrol learned the man had been using an invalid Social Security number to register the vehicle he was driving and over the course of the three month investigation the patrol discovered a string of people either used invalid or even stolen Social Security numbers to register their vehicles."

Counts did not reveal the names of the specific dairy operations involved.

He did tell us this investigation is not over. Stay with Action News as we get to the bottom of this story.

From FAIR: In our study Breaking the Piggy Bank: How Illegal Immigration is Sending Schools into the Red, we estimated based on 2004 data that educational expenditures for illegal immigration were costing the South Dakota taxpayer $29.8 million dollars annually. This cost was partially for educating students who were themselves illegally in the country ($12.4 million) and in part for the education of their siblings born in the United States to illegal residents ($17.4 million).

There is no way this company does the required NEW HIRE reports with the State of South Dakota because the bogus social security numbers would have been caught.

Amy is not a racist. If they can't come into this country and do things correctly then they should not be here. Plain and simple. Pay taxes for one, stop being here on my dime. Get a drivers lic. and some insurance to go with it. Stop filling up our schools with kids that can't speak english and need free lunch.

Move to Canada if you don't like it!! If you lived in Mexico you would move here for a better life too. It is the governments fault not the people. You ignorant small town folks need to get a clue. It was a traffic accident at a bad corner it could have happened to anyone.

If ICE wants a good raid they should come to Huron to the Turkey plant. The City of Huron has turned into a total joke.

Hope the feds get to the Milbank area soon the last three run ins with the law find out they are all illegals. The mega dairies are sopposed to be econimic stimulants but they come in hire these kind of workers at half the wages expect our county to pay for health ins. Not to mention the strain on law enforcement school systems. Its a great way to ruin a community. You can call me racist if you want I say it is telling it like it is. Make jobs for home town Americans thats economic stimulis.

Hey i am originally from Veblen it was not that bad of a community until the HS closed in 2003. After that it has been going for the worse...I agree no AMERICAN would want to work these dairy jobs or the construction jobs in the U.S. I Would lie to see these people get a fair chance to become legal since they make up most of our labor force in the construction world....
