"Welcome to the Historic Bullock Hotel. We'd like to welcome all of you who have chosen to join us on today's famous 3 o'clock Ghost Tour."
She calls herself Martha Bullock and dressed in 1880's garb, she looks the part. But the real Martha was married to Deadwood's first sheriff, Seth Bullock. He was most recently made famous in the HBO series Deadwood. But in the real Deadwood, Seth Bullock and his wife Martha built a hotel that's been operating since 1895.
During the tour, Martha says, "Mr. Bullock and I lived here in body from that time until 1919. But I want to assure you and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that we have never left."
And that's what the Ghost Tour is all about. Martha explains some of the odd happenings that many say have been happening at the hotel for decades. She says, "I must say that things move around here. I must say that things happen photographically and energetically."
There are accounts of bar stools moving on their own, orbs and shadowy figures turning up in pictures, and even ghostly images of Seth and Martha walking down the hotel hallways. Our tour guide says she's experienced plenty of unexplained happenings.
Martha says, "Sometimes I'm standing here and the energy is very intense and I've had my shawl lift up off my shoulders and fold itself on my arm."
While I did experience some "tingling" and changes in pressure during the tour, I wasn't convinced the hotel was haunted. So after the ghost tour, my photographer, Thom, and I decided we should check into the Bullock Hotel to see if we could experience any paranormal activity.
We soon met a group from Ohio. John and Bonnie Leskovac were checking out a picture they sent to the hotel after a stay last year. Bonnie says, "We took a lot of pictures hoping to catch some orbs or spirits. Didn't catch anything in the camera. Went home, loaded it on the computer and there's a big 'A' on the mirror."
Many people say that 'A' is Seth Bullock's way of communicating through a mirror he gave to his wife on her birthday. The hotel has a book filled with all kinds of other strange occurrences former guests have captured on film. But the Leskovac's weren't done experiencing the unexplained. Another member of their party snapped a picture of Seth Bullock's mirror while we were there, and sure enough..An "A" appeared. My photographer Thom asked, "How is that possible? You just took that picture?" She replied, "I just took it!"
The folks at the Bullock gave us full access to the hotel after hours. That includes a basement hallway where you can still see the hotel's original foundation. We got a look at a doorway where some say Seth Bullock has appeared to them. We didn't see anything. But we kept investigating.
While downstairs in what's known as "Seth's Cellar", we did notice the coffee pot light going on and off, even though the switch remained in the off position. Our last venture was into a storage room that sits about 5 feet below Deadwood's sidewalk. I would never have guessed what would happen next.
The room was very cold. It was being used as a storage area, but I didn't like being there at all. Suddenly I heard a women's laugh, very loud over my right shoulder. My photographer heard nothing. To me, it was crystal clear. I asked him, "Did you not hear that laugh? Were you rolling on it? He said, "I didn't hear a laugh."
And that's how our night at the haunted Bullock Hotel would end. I'll never know for sure exactly what I heard. But I know I'll never forget it.
