Turnout Strong in Minnehaha County, Voting Going Smoothly

By Associated Press

Secretary of State Chris Nelson says no irregularities have been reported from across South Dakota by mid-morning, and he says the polls seem to have steady traffic despite many voters who cast their ballots early.

Nelson says he's hearing that turnout is good and things are going smoothly.  Voter turnout was strong today in Minnehaha County.  Auditor Sue Roust says she thinks it will hit 75 percent in South Dakota's most populous county.  She says long lines greeted voters who arrived at polling locations right at 7 a.m. but that workers were able to process the early risers through quickly.

Roust says a little more than 18,000 residents voted early this year, and there were still about 450 outstanding absentee ballots just before noon. Voters continued trickling in to the county's election office in downtown Sioux Falls throughout the day to cast absentee ballots.

More than a third of Pennington County voters had already cast their ballots by the time polls opened. Auditor Julie Pearson said the county is on pace for nearly 18,000 early ballots, which would be between 36 percent and 38 percent of the electorate.

Clay County auditor Ruth Bremer says many voters were lined up outside the National Guard Armory in Vermillion by 6:30am, a half hour before the polls opened.  Brown County Auditor Maxine Taylor also says people lined up outside the two courthouse precincts just before the polls opened. She predicts a heavy voter turnout.
