Carbon Monoxide Deaths Stun Friends

By Kent Erdahl

People in Brookings are reeling after the sudden death of a father and daughter from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Grant Holmstrom, 54, was found dead inside his home just after 2:00 a.m. Sunday. A short time later, police discovered his daughter, 21 year old Janna Holmstrom was also dead.

Brookings police say the Carbon Monoxide leak at the Holmstrom home happened because the furnace exhaust was so old that it corroded and pulled away from the chimney, filling the house with gas. Now many in the community say they're surprised by the deadly result.

Christian Donley added a few words of remembrance to Janna Holmstrom's page on Facebook.com on Monday.

"I will see you again one day in the playground in the sky," Donley said, reading from his own message. "I love you Janna. Always and forever, Christian."

The tributes from friends have flooded in, recalling Janna's love for horses, quick smile and even her job at Taco John's.

"It was always exciting coming into Taco John's and seeing her," said Nicky Brandsrud, Janna's friend and former roommate. "She'd make everybody smile."

Brandsrud says one of the hardest parts is knowing Janna was celebrating her 21st birthday less than a week ago.

"She had always told me that she wanted to turn 21 and stay 21 forever," Brandsrud said.

"It's not one of those, I was out drinking and driving crashes," Donley said. "She was at home in bed."

Police captain Jeff Miller says the officers who responded were also surprised. Grant Holmstrom's wife came home to find him unconscious and called 911 to report a possible heart attack. But after 10 minutes in the house, the officers began to feel their fingers tingle and other symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

"Between finding another person and discovering what was happening to themselves, it caused them to back out of the house," Miller said.

Now, as that house sits empty, Donley says it could happen to anyone.

"It was just a regular family, an honest family that goes to work, goes to church lives a normal life," Donley said. "And honestly, there's no way you could have seen this coming and that's the sad part."

Both friends of the family and Brookings police say they hope people learn two things from this tragedy. The first is, buy a carbon monoxide detector. Second, they hope everyone gets their furnace checked out every fall.

the reporter of this story should double check their sources. Nicky wasnt a friend to Janna at all Janna hated her. Janna only let Nicky live with her because she used to be a friend to Amanda Prochaska until Nicky starting stalking Amanda. So as you can see she isnt the most reliable source.

My sympathies to their family and friends. I feel I have to comment that there are ways to prevent this kind of tragedy. Carbon monoxide detectors and annual furnace inspections can save lives.

Those with prevention comments, yes it can be prevented, however you need to remember that NOT everyone has the money flow to make repairs these days!

In response to duh... You're right, this could have been prevented. However, please try to find a bit more sympathy for thos who have suffered a loss. I am sure that if the table were turned, and it was our family to read about yours, we would write in with more compassion than your insensative comment.

Don't blame this on God, ZQ or anyone else. Each of us will die someday. God has made it clear that not one of us knows the day or the hour of our death. That is why we can't put off getting ourselves right with God. Each of us needs to do that right now, so we know where we will spend eternity. Our day to die and depart from the life we know on earth could be today, but death is not the end of life for children of God. Visit your local Christian church. Doesn't need to be Sunday! Just walk in.

There are a lot of things that can be prevented. I am sure those who have made the prevention comments are perfect and have the materials and money to prevent everything in their lives. I am sure they are perfect, & get the flu shot, pneumo shot as well as everything else that could possibly be a danger. No one is perfect. Stop being mean.

I never meant any disrespect to the family or to janna. I have known her for years. All I meant was that people don't need to remind us that this coudl have been prevented. We are all more than aware of that. I am sorry if i offended you. I meant no harm to you or your family.

I really am sorry if my comment sounded cruel. I had no intentions of it sounding that way. I was simply just telling others that we have all learned from this. I use to know janna. I went to school w/ her. She will be greatly missed :(

the past is the past honestly Janna should be remembered for who she was and not who she hung out with and what kinds of problems they are going through now a days. Janna loved horses singing having fun and being with friends I know thats how I'm going to remember her from now until I pass away just like I always have so please Amanda and Michelle just leave this stuff to rest forgive and forget you know as well as I do thats how Janna would have done it
