Owner: Lay Offs "Unfortunate"

Sioux Falls based Total Card, Inc. laid off 50 people Tuesday.

By KSFY Action News

Total Card, Inc. laid off 50 people Tuesday.

The cuts came weeks after one of their clients ended a business agreement. Employing more than 200 people, TCI is located near 57th Street and Interstate 29. They assist credit card companies with customer service and by processing applications.

The layoffs are a first for the Sioux Falls based company. 40 people eliminated at the Sioux Falls headquarters and another ten at their second location in Luverne, MN.

TCI co-owner Greg Ticknor told Action News that those who lost their jobs were laid off in person shortly after nine this morning. He said, "It was very unfortunate. It was very tough. We're a close knit group and we wish them all the best."

Action News spoke with one TCI employee, whose wife was one of those let go. The man spoke under conditions of anonymity because he feared more cuts. But of the lay offs, he said it's tough because everyone at Total Card is close, like a family.

Ticknor says his director of Human Resources has contacted area credit card companies in hopes that those affected by the lay off might find work elsewhere. They were provided severance packages.

All I can say is, don't work for Resurgent Capital either...they are just as bad or WORSE than TCI.

This company is a joke! What severance package? You can't tell us they (owners) had no idea that this was coming! Mr Tickner didn't even have the guts to tell the employees to their faces. Instead he sent owner Dave Andera to do his dirty work. And even he couldn't tell the employees. He had the HR Director do all the talking. Wake up! Start caring more for your employees than building your big fancy houses! For the employees that are still remaining, I hope this never happens to you!

I had the honor of working with several of those affected by this. Now several of which are good friends of mine. To say 'go get another job' is simply insensitive. These people have vested years into this company. But the 'everyone is replaceable' attitude that TCI has maintained will eventually be it's demise. I wish the best for those that have been impacted by this and pray that things will move quickly for you all.

I know people are hiring. The people at total card are saying they are giving severance packages to the ones that were laid off. They in fact are not and they are jipping people out of money that should be theirs.

As a former manager at TCI, I want to express my concern for those affected by this. I had the priviledge of working with many of them. Several I now consider great friends! The bottom line is that this is a company that has a major glitch between the owners and the people who actually work their butts off. Having never felt appreciated for hard work, I'm not surprised that it's coming to this. One more thing...to those who say just get another job...you are shallow and have no clue! Good luck!

There are other call centers all over Sioux Falls hiring as we speak. I'm sure these people will find jobs. The truth of the matter is that in a capatalist system the meek always get pinched and the bold survive.

These companies are all the same. Screw the little people while the higher ups take the big money.

I am a wife of one of the managers that was laid off. He never got a severance package and also has been told he is only getting paid 80 of the almost 300 vacation hours he has accrued in the 5 and 1/2 years he was there. Very unfortunate that they are trying to make themselves look like they are doing the right thing when they actually aren't. Our kids aren't going to get much of a christmas if any due to the way they are treating the employees that were so loyal they never took time off.

What severance package? You are paying people for what vacation they have left. Insurance ends at the end of the month. You call that severance? Total Card knew this was coming and did nothing to prevent it. Now people are scrambling before the Holidays to get work so they can pay rent/mortgage and give their kids a Christmas. Are you going to explain to my kids why? Supervisors on up appear to be keeping their jobs?? Enjoy living in your new million dollar home Mr. Ticknor and Merry Christmas!
