New Carp Catch Record in South Dakota

By Associated Press

A Rosholt man, Wesley Koehler, has hooked and landed the largest carp ever recorded in South Dakota.

Koehler's Asian bighead carp weighed 58 pounds, 8 ounces. The fish was 4-feet, 5-inches long.

He caught the mammoth fish in the tail waters of Gavins Point Dam on Oct. 26, and it has been verified by state officials as the new record.

The previous record for bighead carp in the unrestricted class was 49 pounds, 8 ounces. That fish was caught in 2002.

What's Koehler plan to do with his fish? He couldn't be immediately reached Friday, but he's a taxidermist.

Nice work, Wesley. Nice big fish, but I suppose most fishermen/women who fish other species would want that lunker out of the gene pool! How about a photo on this website, KSFY? And some of us would like to know what bait was used.
