Minnesota Senate Race Recounted By Hand

By Robert Wilson

When the ballots from last month's election were first tallied up, Norm Coleman led Al Franken by only 206 votes statewide. That slim margin kicked in a state mandated recount. Rock County took a second look at their ballots Wednesday.

One by one, ballot by ballot, thousands of them being reviewed.

And Pete Navara is the fly on the wall.

"How many times do you get a chance to observe something like this," said Pete.

Pete's wife is a recount observer for the Franken campaign.

He's a history buff whose just along for the ride, but says he's never had a chance to see something like this in person.

Gloria Rolfs is Rock County's Auditor and she's at the heart of it all.

"It's been a lot of extra time to get everything together," said Rolfs.

Rolfs and her staff have been working for two weeks to get this recount ready.

The county sets aside 40-thousand a year for elections. She doesn't know how much extra cost this extra work will create.

"I will be real glad when this is over. Then we can put our elections to rest," said Rolfs.

While the black and white ballots get read over, Pete Navara is content to stand quietly by and watch it all happen.

"Its interesting to see the whole process that's involved with it and to get kind of an understanding of what's going on," said Pete.

When Rock County completes their recount, the results will be sent to state election officials in Saint Paul, where the recount numbers will be reviewed.

Somehow the dems in Minnesota will ensure Smalley aka Franken wins.
