School Nurse Shortage

By KSFY Staff

South Dakota schools have a big shortage of nurses, but school leaders across the state say they can't do much about it, given all the problems with school funding.

Statewide, there is just one school nurse for every 1354 students. At many small districts, outside nurses are under contract to make visits, and teachers have to call 911 in emergencies.

Sioux Falls and Rapid City are well-staffed compared to that but they are still below a level recommended by professionals.

Like many states, South Dakota does not require schools to employ their own nurses.
