Prescribed Forest Burns Planned Next Week

The U.S. Forest Service says it will light several large slash piles starting Monday week near Rapid City. The prescribed burns are expected to continue through the week.

Forest Service officials say travelers could see 30-foot to 50-foot flame lengths and heavy smoke from the piles for the first hour or two.

Officials say it's important to burn the slash piles now before they become a fire hazard during the summer.

Crews will be burning areas along state Highway 44 near Falling Rock and Hisega, and near Sheridan Lake and Boulder Hill roads.

Thousands of acres are scheduled to be burned.
