SD Counties Partner To Share Jail

By Associated Press

Yankton County, which opened a new jail last fall, has agreed to take inmates from Hutchinson County, which does not have its own jail.

It's the first contract the county has negotiated since the new jail opened.

Sheriff Dave Hunhoff says he'll meet with other surrounding counties in the coming weeks to try to get more inmate holding agreements.

Yankton County will charge a $55 daily fee for each prisoner. Hunhoff says the fee is lower than those of many other counties that provide such services.

The one-year contract with Hutchinson County is not exclusive, which means the county still can take its prisoners to jails in other counties.
