Seven Year Pancreatic Cancer Survivor Shares Story

Peggy Kessler of Brandon, SD is a seven-year survivor of pancreatic cancer.

By Drew Sandholm

Across the country, millions watched Patrick Swayze talk about his diagnosis and battle with pancreatic cancer in an exclusive interview with ABC's Barbara Walters.

Typically, those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have only months to live. But Action News spoke with one Brandon woman, who is a seven year survivor of pancreatic cancer. Her name is Peggy Kessler. In 2000, she says she didn't feel good after finishing a round of golf. At the time, she didn't think much of it. Maybe, she thought, she had food poisoning.

Things changed when her skin turned yellow. She saw a doctor, who told her she had pancreatic cancer and only months to live.

Kessler got her affairs together, but didn't lose hope. She went through several rounds of chemotherapy, which proved profitable. Seven years later and she says she's feeling "terrific." From horseback riding to camping, she loves all things outdoors and is incredibly active. Kessler says a big part of what saved her life was simply remaining positive.

"You need hope when you have cancer and when you're given a death sentence or just, you know, three months to live and there's not hope there, that's really devastating. But when you are given hope and say, 'Yeah. You know, if you're going to fight for your life, we're going to fight with you and we're willing to try this and this.' And you can see somebody giving you hope, it means everything to a cancer patient," said Kessler.

Is Peggy reachable? I would like to write her if I could. My brother has advanced pancreatic cancer and I need as much info from a survivor as I can get. arnehyman@hotmail.com

I think it's GREAT that people have seen Peggy on commercials for CTCA and her story on KSFY. Her story is SO AMAZING that it would not surprise me if Swayze knows who Peggy is. I realize that many people have "great stories" to tell ... I hope they have the courage to tell their story and give others "hope and inspiration" like Peggy does on a daily basis (she takes calls from people all over the country looking for some hope). Surviving was not where her story ends! Thanks Peggy!

Thank you for the comments! In response to Cindie my cancer did spread to my liver and my lymph nodes. I'm so sorry to hear about your mother and know all too well what she went through. My heart goes out to you and your family. To Christine: I do know other PC survivors in SD. A few of us used to meet every couple months but sadly a couple have passed away. I would like to find others but with all the privacy laws I can only find out about more if they happen to contact me.

I am truely happy for this survivor and I work with the Relay for Life for these types of stories...however, do you think that she is the only survivor of pancreatic cancer in South Dakota? I have seen her in all types of stories and I wish that you would get out there and talk to some other survivors. There are some great stories out there.

I’m a friend of Peggy's and I know for a fact that she was diagnosed July of 2001 with P.C Stage IV which had spread to her liver and lymph nodes. I was there with Peggy when the Doctors told her and when they told her, she only had two months to live. But because Peggy did not accept that and was able to find a place that was willing to fight for her life as much as she was willing to fight she is with us today. Peggy says "you don't have an expiration date stamped on the bottom of your foot"

My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February of 1999. He was given the usual grim diagnosis, but went to Mayo & they decided to try chemo & radiation. The tumor shrunk slightly & has not changed since - he is still with us today. If I recall, my dad met Peggy at a PanCan golf fundraiser a few years ago. She is an inspirational person!!

What an inspirational story this young woman has. I have seen her on the Cancer Treatment advertisement several times and each time it brings a tear to my eye. I would like to know more about Peggy and her story. She could be such an encouragement to so many cancer survivors.
