Walgreens to Eliminate 1,000 Jobs

By Chuck Harmer

Walgreens has announced it will be cutting 1,000 jobs, in order to save about $1 Billion annually by the year 2011.

As part of Walgreen's "Rewiring for Growth" initiative, Walgreens announced today it will be offering early retirement and severance programs to employees in corporate and field management positions and it will have an affect on Sioux Falls Crossing Place Walgreen's District Office.

"First of all it is not going to affect any of our stores or our store employees. This is only Corporate positions in our Chicago Area Headquarters and also a field or District positions around the country." said Michael Polzin, Walgreens Media Relations.

Walgreens plan is to eliminate 1,000 positions in their orporate offices and field offices around the country which will include Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota.

"Well there are some people primarily in our District offices in those states that would be eligible for the voluntary package and then after we hear what one's take it and which don't then we'll have to decide whether any other involuntary reductions need to be made."

Polzin said that there are no hard numbers right now but it will affect a handful of people in our regions Walgreens District Offices.
