UPDATE: Murder Suspect Makes First Court Appearance

David Amotun

By KSFY Action News

Twenty-one-year-old David Amotun made his initial court appearance in Watertown Tuesday morning.  He has been charged with two felonies, second degree murder and grand theft auto.  If found guilty of the murder charge, Amotun faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 17 at 1:30 pm.  Amotun is being held on $500,000 bond.

Amotun is charged with the murder of 18 year old Brandy Jean Cotton of Watertown. Cotton was found dead in her grandmother's Watertown home on Friday morning.

Amotun was identified as a suspect and taken into custody in Sioux Falls early Saturday after he crashed the stolen pickup he was driving  while being chased by police.

Cotton's funeral is Tuesday in Watertown.

I don't care about the victim's history. She didn't deserve to die. Yes, truth is important, but it seems pretty obvious that this individual is guilty. He needs to pay for what he did.

Yes he has family here who is deeply torn by this. But really to answer your questions of criminal background? Does it mattter even the most innocent commit crimes let alone the sane. Hope God judges where this man will go not some ignorant person. Also what about the victims history? Two sides sad outcome. Where is the sympathy for the families involved more or so it seems attention is into factors such as background but not the actual truth in the matter. Chaos
