Flooding: Worst In A Decade

By Melissa Stee

It's being called the worst flooding in more than a decade. Ice jams have forced the Big White River between Murdo and White River out of its banks.

It's hard to believe, but the Big White River has pushed huge ice chunks up over the edge of its banks. It's a sight that still surprises Joyce Glynn, the editor of the Mellette County News.

Joyce Glynn says, "It's just incredible. The huge huge chunks of ice. I saw some that were 10 feet in diameter and 6, 7 feet wide."

But she says as amazing as the pictures are, it's caused big problems for one homeowner along the river and she's worried the spring could be even more destructive.

Joyce Glynn says, "The ramifications from this are going to continue I would imagine, as the ice that's there continues to melt and flow."

Lyman County Emergency Manager Steve Manger says the river's gone down quite a bit. Now they're just watching for anything to change.

Joyce Glynn says, "The main thing that we're trying to get across, is that if the water does go over the roads we don't want anyone to cross through that water."

But as terrible as the flooded river might be now, Joyce says no one can really complain.

Joyce Glynn says, "We just experienced eight years of very severe drought in this part of the country, so it's hard to look at any type of moisture and say we don't want it."
