Gallagher To Return To SD

By Melissa Stee

It's been a long fight over his immigration status, but now Father Gallagher is returning to South Dakota. He was removed from his Kingsbury County post last summer after a lot of immigration red tape. He finally was awarded his green card July 18th.

Right now, Father Gallagher is in Minnesota, where he's been helping a priest for six months, but he'll be headed this way very soon. He's been up to quite a bit since Action News last talked to him.

Father Gallagher says, "It means that I'm doing what I want to do most and that is to be back in South Dakota and to serve the people and my God."

But where he'll serve he says is really up in the air. He's already gotten several calls from parish's around the state asking for his help. So one by one he's filling in his schedule. He's already been asked to officiate mass at the Newman Center in Brookings. And while he's excited to get back to the state, during his time in Minnesota, he stayed very busy.

Father Gallagher says, "I have read a lot of books to make up for all the years. I've also been able to be of more help to families and need."

Now his help is headed to South Dakota, back to the people he's served for over a decade. And that has this Irish Catholic priest pretty excited.

Father Gallagher says, "I'm available. I'm at their beckon call and I'm happy to do it."
