Each house in the South Dakota Legislature some thorny issues to handle before tomorrow's deadline to handle all bills filed in their house of origin.

The Senate floor calendar today has eight Senate bills, including a proposal calling for planning that could result in state-funded pre-kindergarten programs. Tomorrow, the calendar will include an open-records bill.

The House floor calendar today has 21 House bills, including one authorizing a public higher-education center in the Rapid City area and another prohibiting smoking in bars and video lottery casinos.

One bill sure to be on tomorrow's House debate schedule would authorize $6 million in bonding for a minimum security prison in Rapid City.

I think that 6 million would be better spent on EDUCATION in our state so we don't keep losing our teachers and the quality of our educating our students. We are already rated a D- in the overall ratings throughout the US. How low do we have to go. Pretty much bottomed out already.
