A former baggage handler at McCarran International Airport has been sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison for stealing guns from checked luggage and selling at least one of them.

Salvatore Lanzafame pleaded guilty last September in U.S. District Court to possession and sale of a stolen firearm, theft of
government property and unlawful possession of a machine gun.

The 21-year-old Lanzafame worked for TGS Aviation Services.

He admitted stealing a pistol belonging to a Las Vegas police officer and selling it to a teenager in South Dakota.

Lanzafame also was convicted of stealing handguns belonging to a U.S. Air Force officer.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower says Judge Philip M. Pro increased Lanzafame's prison term at sentencing on Monday because three guns were stolen and he engaged in firearms trafficking.
