The South Dakota Legislature has given final approval to a measure that would immediately ban Salvia divinorum, a hallucinogenic plant that some have compared with LSD.

The House voted 61-7 to accept changes the Senate had made in the bill. The measure banning possession of the drug would become law immediately if signed by Governor Mike Rounds.

Officials say the drug is gaining popularity.

Representative Lance Russell of Hot Springs tried unsuccessfully to delay approval of the bill. He says the measure should be changed so it would also make it a crime to distribute the new drug.

It's already too late, the legislature made sure to ram it through as a ZOMG EMERGENCY!!!!! to keep people from stocking up on it. (The evolutionary function of stupidity is to compel the smart to become smarter, however.)

Salvia Divinorum is FAR LESS dangerous than alcohol or even bikes. It is even less dangerous than walking on the street. This ban is a total shame. A proof that politicians react to rumors instead of analysis. Shame! Shame! Shame!

I hope we get something from this at least as funny as the cop calling 911 after eating a bunch of pot brownies with his girlfriend...

Drugs are a problem, but this state has much greater problems that need to be legislated OUT!! such as - gambling establishments...a slap in the face of order and truth...ahhh, what else...oh...."good ol' boy" clubs...that make slaves of people that don't belong to them. Hmm...oh, yes, stop killing children before they leave their mother's womb....these are really important things....a stupid plant that idiots use to get high is petty compared to many other things that plague South Dakota.

This is RIDICULOUS! Where do you suppose people are going to acquire the substance now? From drug dealers! What does that mean? More violence, crime, and waste of resources. Salvia Divinorum has absolutely NOTHING to do with LSD. For starters, LSD "trips" last from 6 to 12 hours while a salvia "trip" lasts minutes. All we are doing by banning salvia is making more problems for ourselves. Regulate the substance and educate the public about it, politicians should stop playing this nanny business!
